Whether you’re hosting a spooky soirée or settling in for a solo scream-fest, the right drink can take your horror movie night from eerie to elite. No matter the vibe, we've curated a short list of killer cocktail pairings for your favourite horror movies.
A Nightmare on Elm Street - Lavender Gin Fizz
Silky, floral, and deceptively soothing, this lavender-based cocktail is Freddy's dream come true. Serve over ice with a sprig of lavender and a side of childhood trauma.
Ingredients:
50ml Gin
20ml Lemon Juice
10ml Lavender Syrup
Tonic to taste (we like Mediterranean)
Recipe:
- Shake gin, lemon juice, and lavender syrup in a shaker over ice.
- Strain into your glass of choosing.
- Top with tonic to taste, and give a gentle stir. If you're feeling extra fancy, add some purple edible glitter - Freddy would love that, right?!
The Exorcist - Japanese Slipper
A luminous green cocktail with a sour kick; not reminiscent of pea-soup at all... Best enjoyed with a twist of lime and a Latin chant in the background. The power of booze compels you.
Ingredients:
30ml Cointreau (Triple Sec)
30ml Midori (Melon liqueur)
30ml Lemon Juice
Method:
- If you're feeling fancy, fetch a martini glass and stick it in the freezer for a moment to chill.
- Shake Cointreau, Midori, and lemon juice in a shaker over ice.
- Strain into your now chilled glass.
A Quiet Place - Rusty Nail
IYKYK 👣 The Rusty Nail is an unsuspecting classic - strong, simple, and hopefully silent. Word to the wise: skip the 'Cheers' on this one, and go straight to sipping in silence.
Ingredients:
50ml Whisky
10ml Drambuie
Lemon Peel
Method:
- Fill a glass with ice (big cubes make less noise, FYI).
- Pour the whisky and Drambuie over the ice, and add the lemon peel.
- Stir gently, preferably near a large waterfall to drown out the noise.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Smoked Spicy Margarita
This one’s not for the faint-hearted. A Smoked Spicy Margarita is bold, brutal, and guaranteed to leave a mark. This is Texas heat in a glass...with a chainsaw ripping through it. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
Salt
Smoked Paprika
10ml Chilli Syrup (chillies, sugar, & water simmered until syrupy - be careful if making your own)
100ml Tequila
50ml Cointreau (Triple Sec)
25ml Lime Juice
25ml Lemon Juice (or 50ml of one, if you don't have both)
Lime Wedge
Method:
- Start by rubbing a lime wedge round the rim of your glass. Then sprinkle salt & smoked paprika onto a small plate, give it a little mix, and then dip the glasses in so the smoked salt mix sticks to the rim.
- Pour tequila, Cointreau, chilli syrup, lime juice, and lemon juice into your cocktail shaker over ice.
- Shake, shake, shake.
- Fill your prepared glasses with more ice, and strain the cocktail over the top. Garnish with chillies if you enjoy pain.
Candyman - Honey & Golden Rum Old Fashioned
Sweet to the sweet, with a tiny, little sting at the end 🐝 Serve with a honey-drizzled rim or a clove-studded orange twist... but don’t look in the mirror while you drink it.
Ingredients:
50ml Golden Rum
10ml Honey Syrup (honey & hot-water, mixed)
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Method:
- Combine the rum, honey syrup, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir until chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over a large cube of ice.
- Garnish with an orange twist, a clove-studded peel, or a honey-drizzled rim.
BONUS BEVERAGE
Jack Torrance's Bourbon & Advocaat
Just set it right there on the bar, Lloyd. This drink hardly counts as a cocktail; it's just straight up booze, but hey, if it's good enough for Jack then it's good enough for us!
Ingredients:
Equal parts bourbon and advocaat; it's up to you how crazy you go, Jack set the bar pretty high already (see what I did there?)
Method:
- Combine bourbon and advocaat in a shaker, over ice, and shake like you are literally possessed with all the spirits of The Overlook Hotel.
- Enjoy. Warning: do not operate boilers or axes after consuming this drink, or else it may be you who is consumed.
Cheers to Fears 🥂
Horror films and cocktails are the ultimate pairing in this house of horrors, so whether you're summoning spirits or just sipping them, we hope these combinations help to add a little flavour to your next fright night. Cheers!
